Do's
- Write it yourself in your own words. Show your ability to communicate effectively
- Make your resume neat and professional looking
- Include your name, address, email address and phone number. Be sure they are easy to read and find
- Write a very specific objective
- Use bullet points whenever possible
- List specifics in your education including dates, GPAs and all degrees with the last degree obtained first
- Include awards, clubs, extra curricular activities (including any volunteer work)
- List work history with specifics. Focus on relevant positions more and explain any gaps in work history
- Have your resume proofread by a third party with good grammar skills
- Sell yourself but be honest
- Follow the general rule of one page but don't cut off experience
Don'ts
- List your age, religion, etc. Employers shouldn't be taking these factors into consideration but some may
- List references unless requested
- Put your picture on your resume
- Be vague or too wordy
- Push accuracy. If your resume is embellished, it will be pulled out in an interview.
- If you do not have a firm grasp of a topic do not list it on your resume
- Discuss negative factors from previous employers
- Change dates to eliminate employment gaps
- Use cheap paper
